November 2018

Another Hayfield Country Show and Sheepdog Trials has taken place and all bills paid and takings counted!

Unfortunately the bad weather on the Sunday affected both the attendance and the takings at the show, especially the bar and refreshments. As usual it didn't affect the enthusiasm of the committee members and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to create this wonderful event.

Luckily we are still in a position to donate £10,000 to the Christie hospital to go towards the Proton Beam Therapy Centre which is to be opened very soon. This is a specialist type of radiotherapy which very precisely targets certain cancers. This will mean that patients will no longer have to travel to the United States or Switzerland for this lifesaving treatment. Therefore, this year we are unable to donate any money to local organisations or charities in the village but next year all profit will go to these worthwhile causes.

It was mentioned on social media several times before this year's show that people were unhappy about the admission charge. Where can you get a full day of entertainment in a beautiful setting for £10? The expenses to put on the show increase every year with some of the acts in the arena costing thousands of pounds. For example the Cavalry of Heroes cost over £3,000 and the Birds of Prey cost £800.

There is also the cost of marquee hire, toilets, insurance etc. Luckily everyone involved in creating this show is a volunteer and without these helpers the show could not go on. Unfortunately, next year, two of our main committee members are not able to contribute as much of their time due to other commitments, so we will need even more help next year. A special thanks to Caz Yardley and Lucy Nicholson who have done a brilliant job of organising the Food Hall and the stalls around the field. They are able to help over the weekend but help is needed beforehand acquiring new stall holders and attractions and taking bookings for the stalls.

If anyone feels they can help in this area please contact me. You do not need to join the committee and the more volunteers we have the less time each person has to spend. Members of the committee are getting older and some have given many years of their time but are now unable to do as much as they did so we really encourage younger members of the community to join us.

The planning of the show starts at the beginning of the year and continues until everything has been cleared away several days after the event. All sorts of help is needed so if you can help in any way, however small, please contact me by phone or email.

We are also appealing for individuals or companies to sponsor the show, in return for advertising their business in the programme and free advertising over the show weekend. Please ask around and let me know if you know anyone. A special big thank you to everyone who helped make this year's show a success and here's to next year's show!

The dates for next year's show will be the 21st and 22nd September 2019.

Paul Bagshaw (Chairman)
